Yuki Kimura at Taka Ishii, Tokyo

Press release:
Taka Ishii Gallery is pleased to present “Reception,” an exhibition of works by Yuki Kimura. Marking the artist’s eighth solo presentation with the gallery since her first showing in 1995, the exhibition features a new installation comprised of five three-dimensional works.

The Taka Ishii Gallery Roppongi space with its built-in counter table made of solid ebony, black mortar floor, L-shaped space with natural light streaming in from the back, and large potted plants outside…This is an attempt to repeat this very space within the space itself. The miniature of the counter table that has respectively been reduced to scales of 75%, 50%, and 25% are of the same quality as the original, and thus may suggest a completely different functionality. Or perhaps it could be regarded as a series of processes by which the table becomes a symbolic object that condenses space and even meaning each time it is reduced. I anticipate that through this perspective illusion, the entire room will appear to have more depth than usual, and feel more difficult to approach.

Yuki Kimura was born in 1971 in Kyoto and currently based in Berlin. She completed her graduate studies at Kyoto City University of Arts in 1996. She continues to exhibit her art work worldwide, major group shows including: California-Pacific Triennial, the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach (May 2017); “Ocean of images: New Photography 2015,” The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2015); 30th São Paulo Biennial (2012); “Mount Fuji does not exist,” Le Plateau / Frac Ile-de-France, Paris (2012); “Kaza Ana / Air Hole: Another Form of Conceptualism from Asia,” The National Museum of Art, Osaka (2011); “MOT Collection: Plastic Memories – to illuminate now,“ the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (2010); “Roppongi Crossing: New Visions in Contemporary Japanese Art 2004,” the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2004); 6th International Istanbul Biennial (1999). Recent solo shows include: “Inhuman Transformation of New Year’s Decoration, Obsolete Conception or 2,” the CCA Wattis Institute, San Francisco (2016); “Untitled,” the IZU PHOTO MUSEUM, Shizuoka (2010); “POSTERIORITY,” Daiwa Press Viewing Room, Hiroshima (2009).
