dépendance is pleased to present ‘One Child per Household’, gallery artist Karl Holmqvist’s third solo exhibition at the gallery.
The exhibition evolves in several parts: three pieces of second hand furniture – two sofas and one chaise longue – have been reupholstered in a recently produced woven wool fabric in six different double-sided signature word repetition patterns designed by the artist. Draped on the sofas are wool blankets made in collaboration with artist Mundi Vondi, further blurring the distinction between art and decoration.
Together with the furniture are large scale printed canvases with similar repeated word patterns all in black and white forming a kind of backdrop – it’s a case of paintings matching the sofas rather than the other way around.
A new series of works on raw linen spell out different artists’ names CERITH WYN WALKER EVANS or HAEGUE YANG FUDONG for instance, in new possible composite names that defy the usual generational or gender classification.
Finally – distributed throughout the gallery – is a printed folder with some of the artist’s recent ‘concrete poetry’, to be read either while sitting on the sofas or else as a take away from the exhibition.
At the end of the opening night Karl Holmqvist will give a short spoken word reading of the poems.
