Alan Ruiz at Bad Reputation, Los Angeles

Press release:
Bad Reputation is pleased to present an exhibition of work by New York-based artist Alan Ruiz. Enclosures features a subset from Ruiz’s ongoing project Western Standards which engages the ubiquitous and repeatable systems that shape, condition, and regulate the built environment. Suspended in aluminum molding, transparent and reflective glass projects from the wall at ominously precise angles, while sectional incisions reveal their interior mechanisms. The geometry of the work is suggestive of axonometric projection which flattens three-dimensional objects back onto two-dimensional space. The objects use the standardized vernacular of the modernist curtain wall, including materials commonly deployed in commercial, domestic, and civic architecture. Such transparent thresholds regulate visually permeable yet materially obstructed boundaries between interior and exterior, private and public space and often demarcate sites of accumulation and dispossession. Ruiz inverts this relation, misdirecting attention onto rather than through these transparent barriers. While framing the seemingly benign cultural techniques and infrastructural systems that reinforce social hierarchies, regulatory norms, and authoritative protocols, the works also index the political possibilities opened up through, oblique, queer, and indirect modes of action.

Enclosures includes two sub-groups: WS-E3-1, WS-E3-2, WS-E3-3 and WS-E3-4, are made from aluminum gaskets and transparent non-tempered glass with polished edges. WS-E3-1A, WS-E-2A, WS-E-3A, and WS-E-4A are made from aluminum gaskets and one-way mirror glass with polished edges. Each work exists as an edition of two plus one artist proof.
